"To the Batpoles!"
|
The Batpoles are how Bruce Wayne and his youthful ward Dick Grayson gain entry to the Batcave from within Wayne Manor. There is an Instant Costume Change Lever on the wall on the way down that transforms them into the Caped Crusaders. This ritual immediately follows after Commissioner Gordon calls the Batphone for help with an arch-criminal.
History[]
"It's lucky you didn't get around to washing our other costumes, Alfred or else Joker might have found himself wearing a Bat-Costume."
|
- - Robin[src]
Once when the Joker was in Wayne Manor he found the secret Batpoles behind the bookcase. After he slid down Alfred opened a panel the wall for the Emergency Batpole Elevator to bring him back up. Joker began screaming and begging for mercy, Batman and Robin arrived and scoffed at the situation seeing that there was no threat at all and Alfred could easily handle this alone. Alfred repeatedly sent Joker up and down the Batpole to torture him.
Behind the Scenes[]
This was a new concept for entrance to the Batcave created for the show. Previously a secret entrance behind a grandfather clock was used for the 1943 Columbia serial starring Lewis Wilson which also created the Batcave. The grandfather clock has been put into the comics and numerous other adaptations, however the Batpoles never quite caught on other than a couple cameo appearances in some cartoon episodes.
